FACULTY & ACADEMIC STAFF HIRING PROCESS CHANGES

The Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives, Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs and Human Resources began reviewing the faculty and academic staff hiring process in 2017. This review was meant to ensure MSU's hiring processes align with the procedures and principles in the Academic Hiring Manual. It is an effort to recommit the university to recruiting and hiring the best complement of faculty and academic staff, while advancing diversity of our academic workforce.

Background

The academic hiring process requires the posting of all open vacancies. This process also allowed to "waive" posting and search processes in limited circumstances. Federal regulations permit the waiving of posting procedures in  the following three circumstances:

  1. Positions for executive and senior management (as defined by federal regulations),
  2. Positions filled internally, and
  3. Positions lasting three days or less.

Our offices collaborated to more clearly define how hiring processes will be used in the future.

Changes Effective May 2018

Beginning on May 21, 2018, hiring of faculty and academic staff will take place under three processes:

  1. Posted Position/Posted MSU Extension Position
  2. Requested Exception to the Posting Process
  3. Appointment Form

Please refer to the communications and resource materials for further details and guidance.
