critical functions and services faqs

The President, or their designee, along with the MSU Police Department, will send communication announcing when MSU will go to modified or curtailed operations. As a matter of policy, Michigan State University does not fully close.

Departmental supervisors and unit administrators determine the critical employees with essential functions and inform affected personnel of their roles. Each department has a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and all employees should be provided a copy.

Depending on the nature of the modification or curtailment, employees not otherwise supporting essential functions/services should not work. s Employees will need to monitor communication channels as designated in their department. Supervisors may need to make modifications to respond to the nature of the situation.

Please monitor the MSU website. If your supervisor has not communicated with you,  contact your supervisor or unit administrator immediately. Modified Operations are a significant situation and are not the same as inclement weather.

You should use your sick leave as scheduled and approved by your supervisor.
We cannot control the wording of the announcements released by the media. As a general rule, Michigan State University does not fully close. Follow the directions provided in your department BCP and actively monitor your communication channels.
The MSU website and MSU Alerts are the most effective sources of information. All faculty, staff and registered students are already in the MSU Alerts system; however, faculty and staff will have to manually enter a cell phone number to receive SMS text messages. Be sure to update your information and/or manage contact preferences to receive MSU Alerts.
Contact your supervisor or unit administrator for further clarification, or contact the Office of Employee Relations at 517-353-5510 or  hr.er@hr.msu.edu .
