East Lansing Income Tax Update

The East Lansing income tax took effect on Jan. 1, 2019. You should have received an email with important deadlines for when you need to review and certify your W-4 Local Tax form information for both your residence and work tax locations through the EBS Portal. Here are the important deadlines and instructions for further action based on whether you are a monthly or bi-weekly paid employee:

Monthly paid employees

  • If you hadn’t certified both your residence and work location already, you received an email notice on Jan. 2, 2019 noting your W-4 Local Tax form defaults and instructions on how to review and certify this information. It’s important to remember to review and certify both your residence and work location.
  • The deadline to make changes/certify is 5 p.m. Jan. 22, 2019 for the January paycheck.

Bi-weekly paid employees

  • You received an email notice on Dec. 17, 2018 noting your W-4 Local Tax form defaults and instructions on how to review and certify this information.
  • The deadline to make changes/certify for the Jan. 4, 2019 paycheck was 5 p.m. Dec. 27, 2018. If you missed the deadline, your W-4 Local Tax form information remained with the defaults for the Jan. 4 paycheck. If this default information is incorrect, you can go into EBS to update your W-4 now for future payrolls.

If you need assistance with certifying your W-4 forms in EBS, follow these  step-by-step instructions  or watch this  how-to video tutorial .

Reminder for all employees: even if you have no changes to the defaulted W-4 form values, you are still required to certify both for Residency and Location of Work in EBS.
