Changes to the Criminal Background Check Policy

The criminal background check policy for faculty, academic staff and executive management has been in place since January 1, 2010.  The policy requires criminal background checks and degree verifications for individuals who receive an offer of employment at MSU. In MSU’s ongoing commitment to provide a safe environment, the policy was revised effective February 12, 2018, to require self-disclosure of certain events from faculty, academic staff and executive management that may occur over the course of one’s employment.

All faculty, academic staff and executive management are now required to disclose to Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs within 72 hours, or at the earliest possible opportunity, all relevant events they may encounter over the course of their employment that could adversely affect their ability to successfully fulfill their responsibilities as an employee of MSU.

These events include:

  • Sanctions that have been applied for professional misconduct
  • Any civil rights violation that the employee admitted or was determined by a court or other adjudicative process to have committed
  • Any felony crime for which the employee was arrested and charged
  • Any serious crime for which the employee was convicted or pled “no contest"

Faculty and academic staff who may find themselves in one of these situations are required to complete and submit the Self-Disclosure form to Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs within 72 hours of the event (or at the earliest opportunity).
