Checklist for Employees Receiving Layoff Notice

Be sure to closely review the following information:

___Meet with a Human Resources Representative

Contact MSU Human Resources to schedule an appointment to discuss how the layoff notice impacts your employment status with the university and any continued placement rights you may have. MSU HR may be reached at 517-353-4434 or via e-mail at HR.TalentManagement@hr.msu.edu.

___Recall Process

Review the information specific to your job classification to learn about your recall rights and responsibilities. You can also find these on the web at Recall Process.

___Benefits

Learn about the effects the layoff notice has on your benefits. Some deadlines are extremely important and can affect what happens to your health and retirement benefits. Please review Layoff Impact on Benefits. You may also contact MSU HR at 517-353-4434.

___Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Visit the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency website or call 1-866-500-0017 to find out information about unemployment insurance benefits.

___MSUeap

Think about contacting Employee Assistance Program (MSUeap) to visit with a counselor. Talking with a counselor can help you and your family members deal with fear, anxiety, anger or other emotions you may experience during the layoff process. The MSUeap is a free, confidential counseling service available to you and your family members. Both employees and your family members have access to the Employee Assistance Program for up to six visits per person within six months from your date of layoff.  MSUeap may be reached at 517-355-4506, 1-888-280-9478 or eap@hc.msu.edu.

___Payroll Deductions

Review your paycheck for automatic payroll deduction items. Cancel those you will no longer need by contacting the specific departments on campus (i.e. Parking Office to cancel parking deduction.)

___Resume

You can request assistance from MSU HR with resume writing, interview skills and career counseling. If you lack personal access to a computer, printer, fax, phone, copy machine or office supplies that you need for your job search, MSU will assist you with accessing those resources on campus. Please call 517-353-4434 or email HR.TalentManagement@hr.msu.edu to set up an appointment.

 ___Contract Provisions

Visit the union contracts for more information about layoff and recall processes in your specific union contract.
