Internet Explorer: Basic Settings


The information below is relevant for the Enterprise Business Systems (EBS) Portal and the HR and Payroll functions within the portal.  For information on compatibility with other EBS Systems, such as Finance and Business Intelligence, see the Compatibility Matrix.

 Many applications require additional settings on the browser to work properly.  See detailed instructions below.

Windows Settings

Default Browser

The default browser should be Internet Explorer. New windows opened from a different browser use the default browser, which can cause a problem if the default browser is not supported for that application.

  1. Search for the "Control Panel"
  2. Choose the Category "Programs"
  3. Select "Default Programs"
  4. Choose "Set your Default Programs"
  5. Under "Web Browser" click the browser that is displayed, and change it to "Internet Explorer"
  6. Close the windows

Internet Explorer Settings

Local Intranet

In order to optimize performance, the EBS Portal must be listed in the proper security zone.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Choose the "Security" tab
  4. Select "Local intranet", then click the "Sites" button
  5. Click the "Advanced" button
  6. Type in "https://secportal.ebsp.msu.edu", then click the "Add" button
  7. "Close" the pop-up window, then choose "OK" to close each of the remaining pop-up windows

Allow pop-ups

Many links will open a new window.  Make sure that the browser allows for pop-ups.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Choose the "Privacy" tab, then either
    1. Check the box "Turn on Pop-up Blocker"
    2. Choose "Settings"
    3. Type in "https://secportal.ebsp.msu.edu" then the "Add" button
    4. "Close" the window, then "OK" to close the remaining pop-up window
  4. Alternatively, you may uncheck the "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" option allowing for all pop-ups
  5. Close the windows

Language

Browsers should be set to have English as the first language.  Items may not display properly on screen if this is set to some other language.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Choose the "General" tab
  4. Choose the "Languages" button near the bottom
  5. Select the "Set Languages Preferences" button
  6. Make sure "English (United States)" is first on the list
  7. Close the windows

Zoom

Having the zoom on the screen set to anything other than 100% can result in improper display of the screen, including a flickering screen.  For most browsers, <control> 0 (zero) resets the zoom to 100%. Here are direction specific to Internet Explorer.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Select "100%"

Toolbars

Add-ins can prevent items from properly displaying in browser windows.  Below are directions for disabling browser add-ins.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Manage Add-ons"
  3. With "Toolbars and Extensions" selected at left
  4. Choose any addons that are not work related, then click the "Disable" button at the lower right corner of the dialog.
  5. "Close" the window when done

ActiveX

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose the "Safety" option
  3. Make sure the option "ActiveX Filtering" is unchecked

 Allow Caching

If you disallow caching, the EBS Portal cannot use the browser file system, and it will appear to the EBS Portal as though you are using Private Browsing. This will prevent the uploading of attachments.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Choose the "General" tab
  4. Look under the section "Browsing history" and choose the button "Settings"
  5. Go to the tab "caches and databases" and make sure the checkbox "Allow website caches and databases" is selected.
  6. Close the windows

Allow Font Download

Icons will not show unless the browser allows the font to be downloaded.

  1. Click the "Tools" icon in the upper right corner
  2. Choose "Internet Options"
  3. Choose the "Security" tab
  4. Select the "Custom level..." button
  5. Scrol down to the 'Downloads' section (about 2/5 down) and make sure "Font Download" is set to "Enable-ON"
  6. Close the windows

Adobe Reader

Installation

Adobe Reader must be installed after Acrobat Professional if the machine has both.  Additionally Adobe Reader must be same or higher version that Acrobat Professional.

File Association

Adobe Reader must be associated with the proper file extension.

  1. In the Windows start menu, search for "Default app settings"
  2. At the bottom, select "Choose default apps by file type"
  3. Scroll down until you find ".pdf Adobe Acrobat Document" at left.
  4. Choose the option next to it and select "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC"
  5. Close the window

Other Settings

  1. Choose "Acrobat Reader DC" from the start menu
  2. From the menubar, click "Edit" then choose "Preferences" from the bottom of the dropdown
  3. Disable Protected Mode
    1. At left, choose "Security (Enhanced)"
    2. At right make sure “Enable Protected Mode at Start-up” is NOT checked
  4. Enable Javascript
    1. At left choose "JavaScript"
    2. At right make sure “Enable Acrobat Javascript” is checked
  5. Click "OK" to close the window
