Policy

Regular benefit eligible employees who have health care coverage through another employer, may waive MSU's health care coverage and receive up to a $600 payment.

Eligibility

Regular full-time (90-100%) and part-time (50-89.9%) faculty and academic staff, university support staff, and flexible appointees.

Note: The health plan waiver option is not available when an MSU employee and his/her dependents are both employed at MSU in regular benefit eligible positions.

Waiver Period

The health plan waiver period runs annually from January 1 through December 31.

Summary of Payment Calculation

Payment for the waiver program is made in February the following year and is considered taxable income.

When enrolled in the health plan waiver option employees accrue points based on their employment percent and number of months enrolled in the waiver program.

Full Time Employees (90-100%) –Full-time employees accrue one (1) point for each month they are enrolled in the health plan waiver program. 

¾ Time Employees (65%-89.9%) - ¾ time employees accrue a 3/4 (.75) point for each month they are enrolled in the health plan waiver program 

½ Employees (50% - 64.9%) - A half time employees accrue a ½ (.50) point for each month they are enrolled in the health plan waiver program

The following table represents the amount of the health plan waiver payment based on the number of points accrued:

Procedure

Enrollment Process

Work Events (ex:change in employment status)

Enroll within 30 days (New Hires) or 30 days (Newly Eligible) of initial employment or appointment to an eligible status

Life Events (ex. marriage or birth of a child)

Enroll within 30 days of life event.

To complete waiver go to EBS Portal.

Log in with your MSU NetID and password and complete two-factor authentication.

If enrollment does not occur within 30 days of initial employment or 30 days from an appointment to an eligible status it is necessary to wait for an open enrollment period to enroll.

Payment Process

MSU Human Resources will submit employees enrolled in Waiver Plan to Payroll. Payment for the waiver program is made in February the following year.
