M.E.N.T.O.R.S.: Centrally-Supported Mentoring Program

The University has implemented a centrally-supported mentoring initiative. Human Resource Development provides the administrative support for this program.
Organizations implementing formal mentoring programs experience a number of benefits, including:

For mentees, a means to enhance current job performance and develop competencies essential for future career development, including: self-confidence, managerial and leadership skills, insights about themselves, problem-solving skills, and organizational understanding
M.E.N.T.O.R.S. features the matching of mentors and mentees from different areas of campus, or within the same unit. Human Resource Development provides centralized support and coordination. M.E.N.T.O.R.S. features include:

Matching of less senior or experienced staff with those who are more senior or experienced. Matches may occur between individuals from the same or different units on campus.

Formal pairings lasting one year

For units implementing mentoring, administrators identify a unit mentoring program coordinator. The coordinator's responsibilities include: announcing the program, identifying mentors, taking applications from potential mentees, matching mentors and mentees, advising pairs during the year-long process, and conducting unit-level evaluation of the program

Unit flexibility to implement the type of mentoring that will best meet organizational objectives (transitional mentoring for new employees or career/navigational mentoring for career development

Direct HRD support for mentor-mentee pairs from different units on campus
Program Support Provided by HRD
Human Resource Development provides support and coordination the M.E.N.T.O.R.S. initiative, including:

Design and distribution of all written materials - a manual containing implementation steps, troubleshooting guide, sample documents, and twelve monthly conversation guides to support and enhance the discussions of mentoring pairs

Planning and offering of skill-building workshops for mentors and mentees
-
Planning and coordination of all centralized orientation sessions

Planning and conducting of periodic meetings for coordinators and mentoring pairs

Consultation with unit coordinators to address issues that may arise

Direct coordination and support for cross-unit mentoring pairs, including accepting applications and making matches
-
Evaluation of the overall initiative and assistance with unit-level and independent evaluation processes

The next orientation for matched pairs is tentatively shceduled to be held on Friday, June 22, 8:30 am - 1 pm, concluding with a networking lunch that will be provided. Applications are accepted on a continuing basis. The matching process takes time; to insure that a successful pairing can be made prior to the orientation session, early applications are strongly encouraged.
