MSU Tuition Waiver: Educational Assistance benefit information

MSU credit courses that are approved for Educational Assistance benefits (including Lifelong Education) and billed through the Student Accounts office are processed as a tuition waiver.  This benefit allows MSU waiver of tuition payment at the time of billing.  MSU Tuition Waiver covers the tuition for approved MSU credit courses as agreed upon per the employee's collective bargaining unit agreement.*  Please note that some programs may charge additional fees or tuition in excess of the prevailing rate.  Please check with your academic department, especially if you are planning to take an online course. These additional fees are not covered by the benefit and are the responsibility of the student.  Additional course or lab fees, surcharges and student taxes are also the responsibility of the student.

*Please check your employee group's collective bargaining agreement for your specific benefit coverage.

You may mail or deliver your completed application to HRD, 10 Nisbet Building.  Applications may also be faxed to the attention of  Julie Rorick at 517-432-2979.

Educational Assistance benefits are calculated on an academic year basis, starting with the fall semester.  Please contact Julie Rorick with any questions you might have at 517-884-0177 or rorick@hr.msu.edu.

Student Accounts web site provides details about the most recent MSU tuition and fee structure changes. You may wish to review the information on the following web page:  http://ctlr.msu.edu/costudentaccounts/tuitioncalculator.aspx

Graduate Degree-related Educational Assistance Taxation information

Educational Assistance benefits are regulated by the IRS.  Graduate degree-related tuition benefits, specifically, are covered by IRC 127. The code provides a maximum taxation exclusion of $5,250 per tax (calendar) year. This includes tuition benefits for  graduate degree-related courses.   The amount that exceeds the $5,250 exclusion is taxable as income.

Please note that the exclusion is calculated on a tax (calendar) year basis.  For MSU Tuition Waiver, the benefit is considered received at the time the classes begin at MSU.  For courses taken at other institutions, the benefit is considered received at the time the reimbursement check is processed for a successfully completed course.  If you have questions, please contact Edita Herbstova at herbstova@hr.msu.edu or 517-884-0172 or Julie Rorick at rorick@hr.msu.edu or 517-884-0177.

Educational Assistance Reimbursement Deadline for Non-MSU Courses

Completed applications are due in HRD 30 calendar days before the start of classes at your institution. Applications may be mailed (allow time for delivery by the deadline date) to HRD, 10 Nisbet Building, delivered in person, or faxed to HRD at 517-432-2979. Please contact Julie Rorick for additional details at 517-884-0177 or rorick@hr.msu.edu.

LCC and Other Schools' Grade Reports

Employees taking credit classes at Lansing Community College need to provide a printed grade report showing a successful course completion (grade 2.0 or better) and itemized proof of payment in order to receive their  Educational Assistance reimbursement.  This information is available online through student self-service and can be printed with the LCC logo.  The printouts must include the student's name.

Please note:  If you are taking classes at other institutions that do not routinely provide printed grade reports, you may need to request one from your school in order to have your reimbursement processed.  Your institution's registrar's office can assist you.

MSU grade reporting is handled electronically and there is no processing change.

If you have any questions regarding the grade report format, please contact Julie Rorick at 517-884-0177.
