Managing Chronic Health Conditions
Some health problems just can’t be controlled. If you break a leg while rollerblading or develop symptoms of a heart attack, you obviously will need immediate medical care. These are examples of “acute conditions”. Acute health conditions usually develop suddenly, and when care is required, that care is usually time-limited.
But there are other health problems that you may be able to play a major role in managing. These are called chronic conditions. Chronic conditions typically have a slow onset and may gradually worsen over time. They are long-term conditions that are often manageable but not curable. Examples of chronic conditions include arthritis, asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
If you have a chronic condition, how well you work together with your health team on important health behavior goals and how closely you follow the care plan you devise together can have a great deal to do with how healthy you will be in the long term. These factors also may impact how expensive your care will be over the course of your life. Investing time, energy and resources in managing chronic health conditions makes sense for you and for MSU.
The links below will guide you to information on some common chronic conditions, including how much those conditions currently cost MSU in health care expenses and links to some great resources to help you better understand and manage these chronic conditions. We plan to continue adding information about various conditions over time – so if you don’t see a chronic condition here that interests you, check back at a later date.
