Support Staff Policy & Procedure for Staff Recognition: Service, Retirement, Distinguished Staff
Policy
The University honors University support staff members completing 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 years of service; retirees; and Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award recipients at a ceremony where awards and certificates are presented by University officials.
Eligibility for service recognition is based upon the employee's retirement eligibility date. Recipients of the Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff awards are nominated and then selected by the Distinguished Staff Award selection committee which is made up of University employees.
One recognition ceremony is held each year. The date of the event varies depending upon availability of speakers and facilities. The following are invited to attend the ceremony: the awardee, retiree and spouse/OEI or guest; the supervisor of the Distinguished Staff awardee; and appropriate University officers and administrators.
Procedure
Verification of eligibility:
MSU Human Resource Services:
- Prepares list of staff members eligible for award.
- Sends list of names to appropriate department to be checked for accuracy.
- Provides administrative support to Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Awards selection committee.
Department:
- For service awards - verifies accuracy, corrects list and notifies MSU Human Resource Services of corrections.
- For Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award - may nominate outstanding employees. (NOTE: Peer nominations are encouraged.)
Awards selection:
- For service awards - employee selects from brochure provided by awards company.
- For Distinguished Staff - award is selected by Distinguished Staff Awards Committee and a $2,500 (pre-tax) check is provided by MSU Development Office.
Invitations:
MSU Human Resource Services: Mails printed invitations to attend the ceremony to awardees, retirees and University administrators.
Awardee: Informs MSU Human Resource Services whether they will attend and identifies name of spouse/OEI or guest.
Ceremony:
MSU Human Resource Services:
- Awards are made available to awardees at the ceremony.
- Pictures are taken of years-of-service awardees and retirees. A copy is provided to the employee at no charge.
