Student Insurance Waiver Requirements/Process

Waiver Request System

Waiver Criteria

MSU students who are required to have a minimum level of health insurance coverage have the option of waiving the MSU sponsored student insurance plan and purchase other coverage. Currently, students who are required to have health insurance coverage include medical students, international students, and newly admitted students (including newly admitted to a level) for the 2011/2012 academic year.

If you are a Newly Admitted Student:

MSU requires all newly enrolled students have a minimum level of health insurance coverage effective Fall 2011. If you are not covered under a family policy, personal policy, or Medicaid, you may purchase the Aetna MSU-sponsored policy or other private insurance. If you have not yet informed MSU that you have your own insurance coverage, you have been enrolled in the MSU-sponsored student insurance plan and a charge was added to your Spring tuition bill. This insurance charge can still be removed from your tuition bill for Spring semester if you inform MSU that you have other health insurance coverage that meets the University-recommended level of coverage. However, if you do not demonstrate that you have adequate health insurance coverage by February 29, 2012, the insurance charge will remain on your tuition bill.

If you are a Medical or International Student:

The charge for the MSU sponsored student health insurance plan will automatically be added to your tuition bill. However, if you can demonstrate that you have other health insurance coverage that meets the waiver criteria, you may apply for a waiver of coverage. If your waiver is accepted, the insurance charge will be removed from your tuition bill for the period requested. If you do not apply to waive coverage by the deadline, the insurance charge will remain on your tuition bill and you will automatically be enrolled in the insurance plan for fall or spring semester.

If you are a Graduate Assistant:

If you are a graduate assistant, you will automatically be enrolled in the MSU sponsored student health insurance plan and the insurance premium will be paid by MSU. If you would like to waive coverage, you must demonstrate you have comparable coverage.

In order to waive the MSU sponsored student insurance plan, student’s coverage must meet minimum criteria in order to receive approval. The waiver criteria are different depending upon the student type.  If you are interested in requesting a waiver, you may submit your information online through the following links:
