Cigna Global Plan for Retirees

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

International Coverage Options

Retirees or other Humana eligible individuals Medicare or Non-Medicare eligible, currently enrolled in MSU health care, living abroad (versus just traveling) with an international permanent and/or mailing address on file with MSU.

Note: Effective January 1, 2021 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) is no longer an option for Retirees or other Medicare eligible individuals not actively working.

Also, individuals participating in MSU health care that continue enrollment with Humana, traveling abroad, may also wish to research this plan for additional coverage.

You have the option to convert your current coverage to an individual plan through BCBSM. To do so, you must apply for coverage within 60 days of losing coverage by contacting 313-256-2712 or ILapsley@bcbsm.com. Again, this is the purchaser’s decision, and that individual is responsible for 100% of the cost.

General Coverage Information

Humana Group Medicare Advantage PPO Plan

A 20% co-insurance for emergency services outside the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after $100 deductible. Benefit is limited to $250,000 each plan year or 60 consecutive days, whichever is reached first. Benefit does not apply to combined annual deductible or combined annual out-of-pocket maximum.

Members would be required to pay for the services received and submit a claim to Humana for reimbursement along with proof of payment and any medical information or records available from the provider. The charges will be converted to US currency and reimbursed to the member. Please check with Humana on coverage limits.

Humana MSU Non-Medicare PPO Plan

Emergency care received while traveling outside the U.S. or taking a cruise is covered. Members would be required to pay for the services received and submit a claim to Humana for reimbursement along with proof of payment and any medical information or records available from the provider. The charges will be converted to US currency and reimbursed to the member under the out-of-network benefits after first applying either the $50 emergency room co-payment or the out-of-network deductible of $500 and 10% co-pay depending on services rendered. Please check with Humana on coverage limits.

If living outside of the U.S. you should research international health insurance and prescription drug coverage options. Coverage under the Humana Group Medicare Advantage PPO plan and the Humana MSU Non-Medicare PPO are for individuals who reside in the USA, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, per the provisions of the plan.

That depends.  First, to be automatically enrolled in a Humana plan, you must currently be enrolled in a health care plan and NOT have an international permanent or mailing address. If you meet the above, you will be automatically enrolled and it is your choice to decide to stay in or opt-out.
