College: Any unit at the major administrative unit level; it may be a college (e.g. College of Business), a Vice Presidential unit (e.g. Provost's Office), or other unit (e.g. MSU Extension).
College code: The first 2 digits of the common codes for units in the college.
Common Code: A five digit number assigned to each unit in the University. You may reference Common Unit Codes on the WEB at https://commonunitcode.msu.edu/
Department: Any unit at the department level; it may be a department (e.g. Department of History), a school (School of Social Work), a center (Pesticide Research Center), etc.
Department code: The last 3 digits of the common code for the unit.
MAU: Major Administrative Unit (e.g. College of Business, Vice President Research and Graduate Studies)
Primary Department: Department with administrative responsibility for the employee. For faculty/academic staff appointed in multiple departments, only one department is designated as the primary department. For all University headcount reports, faculty/academic staff are counted in the primary department only. The department which provides the major share of budgetary support is usually designated the primary department.
