Students who were enrolled spring semester and received CFC will automatically have CFC applied for summer, if still eligible. No new CFC application needs to be made.   If they do NOT want CFC for summer they need to contact the Office of Financial Aid at 353-5940.

Transfer credits count toward the total number of credits allowed by this benefit. Your dependent's eligibility ends at the conclusion of the semester during which the 120th credit is attempted. Please refer any questions to Julie Rorick at 884-0177 or rorick@hr.msu.edu.

MSU Tuition Waiver: Educational Assistance benefit information

MSU Tuition Waiver covers the matriculation fee and tuition appropriate for your academic level, not to exceed the prevailing graduate level rate of $434 per semester credit, up to the maximum number of credits applicable for your employee group.  Please note that some programs may charge additional fees.  These fees are the responsibility of the student.  Additional fees, surcharges and student taxes are also the responsibility of the student.

You may mail or deliver your completed application to HRD, 10 Nisbet Building.  Applications may also be faxed to the attention of  Julie Rorick at (517) 432-2979.

Educational Assistance benefit is calculated on an academic year basis, starting with the fall semester.  Please contact Julie Rorick with any questions you might have at 517-884-0177 or rorick@hr.msu.edu

Graduate Degree-related Educational Assistance Taxation information

Educational Assistance benefits are regulated by the IRS.  Graduate degree-related tuition benefits, specifically, are covered by IRC 127. The code provides a maximum taxation exclusion of $5,250 per tax year. This includes tuition benefits and matriculation fees, if provided, for  graduate degree-related courses.   The amount that goes over the $5,250 exclusion is taxable as income.

Please note that the exclusion is calculated on a tax (calendar) year basis.  For MSU Tuition Waiver, the benefit is considered received at the time the classes begin at MSU.  In case of courses taken at other institutions, the benefit is considered received at the time the reimbursement check is processed for a successfully completed course.    If you have questions, please contact Edita Herbstova at herbstova@hr.msu.edu or 517-884-0172.

Educational Assistance Reimbursement Deadline for Non-MSU Courses

Completed applications are due in HRD 30 calendar days before the start of classes at your institution. Applications may be mailed (allow time for delivery by the deadline date) to HRD, 10 Nisbet Building, delivered in person, or faxed to HRD at (517) 432-2979.  Maximum amount reimbursed per semester credit for fall 2007 is $378.75.  Matriculation, course fees, or other charges, are not covered and are the responsibility of the student.  Please contact Julie Rorick for additional details at 884-0177 or rorick@hr.msu.edu.

MSU Tuition and Fee Changes and Their Impact on Educational Assistance

Student Accounts web site provides details about the most recent MSU tuition and fee structure changes. You may wish to review the information on the following web page:  http://www.ctlr.msu.edu/studrec/tuition_feesFS.htm

LCC and Other Schools' Grade Reports

Employees taking credit classes at Lansing Community College need to provide a printed grade report showing a successful course completion (grade 2.0 or better) and itemized proof of payment in order to receive their  Educational Assistance reimbursement.  This information is available online through student self-service and can be printed with the LCC logo.  The printouts must include the student's name.

Please note:  If you are taking classes at other institutions that do not routinely provide printed grade reports, you may need to request one from your school in order to have your reimbursement processed.  Your institution's registrar's office can assist you.

MSU grade reporting is handled electronically and there is no processing change.

If you have any questions regarding the grade report format, please contact Julie Rorick at 884-0177.

LCC Billing

LCC bills for classes by a "billing hour", not by the traditional credit hour.  While about two thirds of LCC classes  reflect the same number of billing hours as the number of credit hours assigned to a class, about one third do not. Based on the actual contact hours, a class may be billed up to three additional billing hours.

Please contact Julie Rorick if you have questions. Phone: 884-0177,  e-mail:  rorick@hr.msu.edu.
