Pay Rates

The authorized pay rates for students are reviewed annually by the MSU Board of Trustees and sent to all departments in mid-July. A standard pay range has been established for all similar jobs on-campus. There are nine pay ranges: Grade Levels I, II, III, IV, V,VI,VII,VIII, and IX.

To determine the rate of pay for a student employee, employers must first identify the most appropriate job classification. The classification and grade level will then dictate the pay range.

If an employer has a job that does not fit the existing job classification, the employer should contact MSU Student Employment for assistance in developing a new job classification.

Project Pay

Occasionally, an employer may wish to pay a student a lump sum of money to perform a job for which it is impossible or impractical to document the actual number of hours worked. In such a case, the employer must submit a Project Pay Form to MSU Student Employment for approval. WRITTEN APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED THROUGH MSU STUDENT EMPLOYMENT PRIOR TO PROCESSING THE STUDENT FOR EMPLOYMENT. The Office of Contract and Grants must give written permission for any project pay made on account numbers 61-0000-619999.

Overtime Pay

Students will receive time and one-half for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. If a student is working for more than one department and exceeds 40 hours per week, the last department hiring the student is responsible for the excess hours and will pay the time and one-half rate.
