The purpose of this procedure is to comply with the New Policy Statement on Faculty Review issued by the Office of the Provost on February 11, 1997. This procedure will be reviewed by the entire NSCL faculty and, after appropriate modification, approved by the NSCL director and the faculty members subject to the procedure.
1. Annually, prior to March 1, the NSCL director will request a written summary of the past year's activities from each faculty member for which the NSCL is the lead administrative unit. A response prior to April 1 will be requested.
2. Annually the NSCL director will appoint a three-member NSCL Faculty Evaluation Advisory Committee. The Committee shall be composed of three tenured professors holding joint appointments in the NSCL but not subject to evaluation by the NSCL director. The committee will be charged with preparing a written evaluation of each faculty member to be reviewed by the NSCL Director. The evaluations should be referenced to the current NSCL Faculty Salary Increase Criteria and provide the following information.
* Professor Xxx's performance warrants an (above average, average, below average) raise.
* Strong points are: (list)
* Improvement would be useful in: (list)
The Advisory Committee will provide their evaluations to the NSCL director prior to April 15.
3. During the period April 15 through May 15 the NSCL director will prepare draft written evaluations for each faculty member to be reviewed and meet with each faculty member to discuss the draft evaluation. The evaluations will be referenced to the current NSCL Faculty Salary Increase Criteria and will be based on the Director's personal observation of performance and on advice received from the NSCL Faculty Evaluation Advisory Committee.
4. Prior to May 15 the NSCL director will finalize, date and sign the evaluations and provide a copy to the faculty member. Faculty members will be reminded that they may submit comments in writing to the NSCL director within one month of receiving the written evaluation and may request a meeting with the NSCL director.
5. Prior to June 15 the activity summaries prepared by each faculty member, the written evaluations prepared by the NSCL director and any comments on the evaluation submitted by the faculty member will be entered into the faculty member's NSCL personnel file.
