12. Professional Development (Staff Handbook for the CA System of the NSCL)

12.1    CA staff members are encouraged to take advantage of special conferences, seminars, colloquia, and other short-term activities and programs which will add to or update their job- related professional knowledge and skills. (When participation in such programs will effect the operation of the work unit, such as when attending programs held during scheduled working hours, etc., staff members should clear the scheduling of their participation in such a program with their supervisors in advance.) Attendance at professional meetings and participation in programs which are held outside of the immediate area further require the approval of the Department Head to arrange for Travel Authorization and for possible reimbursement of expenses. (As funds for financial assistance are limited, the extent of reimbursement is considered individually.)

12.2    The Laboratory as a point of policy encourages the further professional development of all its staff. In accord with this, all CA staff are eligible to enroll in formal courses on either a degree or non-degree basis (subject to the limitation that a staff member on a full-time appointment may carry no more than five credit hours at one time). In the case of job-related courses, special working schedules can be arranged with the Department Head in order to attend classes given during normal working hours. Tuition expenses for job related classes may also be reimbursed by the Laboratory, subject to availability of funds in appropriate Laboratory accounts and if approved by the Department Head in advance of registering for the class.
