4.1 An Engineer (NSCL), Physicist (NSCL) or Assistant Professor (NSCL) achieves Continuing Status by being reappointed after serving two three-year probationary periods, or by being promoted to the rank of Staff Engineer (NSCL), Staff Physicist (NSCL), or Associate Professor (NSCL) at any time during her/his probationary appointment periods.
4.2 A Staff Engineer (NSCL), Staff Physicist (NSCL) or Associate Professor (NSCL) achieves Continuing Status by being reappointed after completion of her/his initial three-year probationary period or by being promoted to the rank of Senior Engineer (NSCL), Senior Physicist (NSCL), or Professor (NSCL) at any time during her/his probationary appointment period.
4.3 A Senior Engineer (NSCL), Senior Physicist (NSCL), or Professor (NSCL) achieve Continuing Status by being reappointed at the end of her/his initial three-year probationary period. At the option of the Laboratory Director, continuing appointment status may be granted at the time of the initial appointment as Senior Engineer (NSCL), Senior Physicist (NSCL), or Professor (NSCL).
4.4 Continuing Status attaches to the appointment or reappointment actions described above. In addition to their basic rank, CA staff may hold administrative positions (Project Leader, Department Head, Director, etc.); administrative positions are in all cases temporary and subject to change at any time by action of the responsible administrative authority.
