00. NSCL Continuing Appointment System
The Continuing Appointment System (hereinafter referred to as the CA System) of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as Laboratory) provides appointment continuity approximately paralleling tenure system (TS) appointments in the University. Like the tenure system, the structure of the CA system is designed to specifically insure that CA staff will not be subject to capricious actions by the Laboratory or University administration and that the exercise of prerogatives of academic freedom will be encouraged. Also, like the tenure system, probationary appointments normally precede the granting of continuing status. Continuation of CA system appointments is in all circumstances contingent on availability of funds, the funding base supporting CA appointments being the composite of grants and contracts administered by the Laboratory plus University allocations to the Laboratory. CA appointments, with appropriate due process procedures, may also be terminated for cause. All of these aspects of the system are described in detail in the following sections of this document and in its Appendices.
