2.0 Criteria for Decisions for Appointing Individuals in the Health Programs Faculty Track

Health Programs Faculty positions may be established under the following conditions:

    a. A need for a faculty position exists with the kinds of duties described earlier in this document, within a department or other unit associated with the Medical and Nursing Colleges.

    b. A reasonable expectation that funding to support the faculty position for the period of appointment exists within the unit or College through discretionary, variable and non-continuing funds, grants, and/or practice revenues. From time to time individuals appointed under this system might be temporarily supported on general funds as would be necessary to complete a period of service for which the University was obligated to the individual.

    c. The unit is able to clearly document the need, the sources of funding for and the roles of a faculty member a significant portion of whose duties are normally in patient care services.

Health Programs Faculty positions are established on the recommendation of the appropriate academic unit administrator, dean or separately reporting director, and require approval by the Provost. Appointment to the Health Programs Faculty does not preclude an individual from application to a tenure system position should one become available for which the individual is qualified. Nor should previous service as a member of the Health Programs Faculty be considered a prerequisite for application for a tenure system faculty position.

All HP faculty members will receive both a base salary and a practice component salary2.  When an HP faculty member accepts a position under the rules of the tenure system his/her responsibilities may change, thus his/her total salary and rank may also change. Rank is associated with criteria which are different depending on whether one is an HP faculty member or a tenure system faculty member, and therefore one's rank must be appropriate to the criteria of the system into which one is entering. The base salary should not change, but would be specified at the time of the letter of offer, as would the practice component portion of the individual's salary.

 Footnotes:
2Currently the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has no practice plan, thus a practice salary  component is not relevant.  With the establishment of a CVM practice plan, practice salary component arrangements will be developed.
