Years of service shall count from the date of the initial appointment (as a member of the HP faculty), or from the ending date of the previous professional development leave. All leaves of absence shall be excluded in determining years of service for a professional development leave. All professional development leaves shall count against the period of appointment and/or additional appointment.
The length of leaves shall not be extended on the basis of more than six years of service since the previously compensated leave. Appropriate applications for a full year of leave with reduced pay normally have precedence over shorter semester leaves with full pay. Since faculty members in this appointment system normally receive a base salary and a practice component of the salary (except in CVM), it is the decision of the Department Chair7 whether or not to guarantee the practice component of salary during a professional leave.
