5.5 Other Benefits

While certain benefits of the Health Programs Faculty were detailed earlier, other automatic and optional benefits are also a part of the usual and customary benefit package. These benefits are divided into Automatic and Optional benefits. Automatic benefits are automatic and no enrollment applications are necessary. However, eligibility conditions need to be met. Note: When an individual who has been a MSU university faculty member (for example, within the fixed term system) applies for and is granted an HP faculty position, the individual's prior service months will be counted toward benefit eligibility. For example, if a fixed term faculty member who has been employed for five years on the MSU campus is granted an HP appointment, he or she will be considered to have met the waiting period necessary to qualify for disability insurance. In the case of the Health Programs Faculty, automatic benefits are listed in the Michigan State University Benefits Summary Sheet.

Optional benefits may be accessed by Health Programs Faculty if written application for benefits takes place within 60 days of the initial HP faculty appointment, during an OPEN ENROLLMENT period, or in some cases by furnishing evidence of insurability. These optional benefits are also included in the Michigan State University Benefits Summary Sheet.
