Q: Who is eligible to enroll in student health insurance?
The MSU Student Health Insurance Base Plan is available to:
- Graduate students in a degree program or completing a certification process.
- Detroit College of Law at MSU students who are actively attending classes on campus.
- Undergraduate and Lifelong Education students taking 7 or more credits.
- All registered International and Medical students are automatically enrolled through payment of a tuition charge in fall and spring. (The charge may be waived with proof of comparable coverage and approval from MSU Human Resources Benefits.)
- International Visiting Scholars are required to enroll. (This requirement may be waived with proof of comparable coverage and approval of the MSU Human Resources Benefits office.)
The MSU Graduate Assistant Health Insurance Plan is available to:
- Graduate Assistants with 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 appointments (eligible for tuition waiver) are automatically enrolled in the Plan. Single person premium for Graduate Assistants is paid by the University.
- Dependents of Graduate Assistants are partially funded by MSU:

Q: Where do I go for medical treatment?
Olin Health Center is the gatekeeper for students and/or spouses. Students/spouses must use the resources of Olin Health Center first, where treatment will be administered or a referral issued. Expenses incurred for medical treatment received outside the Olin Health Center for which no prior approval or referral is obtained are excluded from coverage. The gatekeeper is a facility from which treatment must originate in order to obtain benefits, if you are within 45 miles of the MSU East Lansing Campus.
An Olin Health Center referral for care is necessary, except under the following conditions:
- Medical Emergency. The student/spouse must return to Olin Health Center for any necessary follow-up care;
- Medical care received when the student/spouse is more than 45 miles from campus which includes medical students currently on rotation outside of the 45 mile radius;
- Medical care obtained when a student/spouse is no longer able to use Olin Health Center due to a change in student status;
- Maternity;
- Mental and/or nervous conditions or
- If you are a student/spouse of the Detroit College of Law at MSU, an International Visiting Scholar or enrolled in the Continuation Plan.
Dependent children are encouraged to utilize the resources of the MSU HealthTeam first (if within 45 miles of the MSU campus) where treatment will be administered or a referral issued.
