Retirement Information and Helpful Hints

The University Non-Contributory Retirement Plan (UNCRP) and the MSU Base Retirement Plan ARE NOT TAXABLE under Michigan State Income Tax (if your residence is within Michigan). However any income generated from a Supplemental Retirement Plan, Deferred Compensation Plan and/or additional contributions to the MSU Base Retirement Plan (in excess of the required employee contributions) may be state taxable.

You will always want to keep your MSU Base Retirement Plan, Supplemental Retirement Plan, and/or Deferred Compensation Plan investment sponsor informed of your current address. You may contact Fidelity at 1-800-343-0860, TIAA-CREF at 1-800-842-2776 and Vanguard at 1-800-662-0106 to report address changes. Additional investment sponsor contact information.

Below is a list of some benefits and discounts offered by various campus units.

  • MSU ID Card:  A new MSU ID card will be issued at retirement. 
  • Vehicle Parking Permit: Parking stickers are available to retirees. Your MSU ID card will be required. Contact Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) at (517) 355-8440 to inquire about the cost and availability. 
  • Sports Events Admission: You may attend baseball, fencing, gymnastics, outdoor tennis, soccer, swimming, wrestling and track events (except MSU relays) free with your MSU ID card.
  • Library Privileges: You have complete library privileges by presenting your MSU ID Card.
  • MSU News Bulletin: This publication is automatically mailed to you free of charge anywhere in the United States. We will notify the MSU News Bulletin of your retirement and address. However, you are required to submit any future address changes directly to the MSU News Bulletin Office by telephoning (517) 355-2281.
  • Faculty and Staff Directory: Your name will be included in the directory and you may request a copy yearly by calling the Registrar’s office at (517) 355-4521.
  • IM Sports Facilities: Simply present your MSU ID Card, although use of the facilities may be restricted to certain hours or there may be a fee for certain activities.
  • MSU NetID: All retirees can retain their MSU NetID account. If you need assistance activating your MSU NetID account, contact Academic Computing and Network Services, Network Help Desk at (517) 432-6200 or if calling long distance, (800) 500-1554.
  • Computer Discounts: Retired Faculty receive some discounts at the MSU Computer Store.
  • Season Tickets: Faculty or staff (retiree) discount for football, basketball and hockey – except single game tickets.
  • Season Golf Pass: $585 – All calendar year. Rate subject to change every January.
  • MSU Tennis Facility: Court fee discounts follow: $18.00 per hour for full court rental; $9.00 per hour for singles; $4.50 per hour for doubles. Contact the facility at 3571 E Mt Hope, Lansing MI 48824 (517) 355-2209.  Non Retirees are charged according to their affiliation with the University.
  • State News: You can order and pay by semester (summer, fall, spring) or for the full year.  Contact the State News at (517) 355-3447.
  • Evening College: $45 rate for all non-limited enrollment courses for individuals over age 65 who are fully retired. Spouses of these retirees may also qualify.
  • MAC Membership: If you are insured under the Physicians Health Plan you are eligible for a 50% discount on the initiation fee.

The above rates are not guaranteed. We do attempt to keep them current, however, you may wish to contact the specific areas to confirm costs.

Other notes:

  • All retirees automatically become members of the MSU Retirees Association (MSURA). If you would like to volunteer or want additional information, you may contact MSURA (http://www.msu.edu/~msura) at 22 Nisbet Bldg, 1407 S. Harrison Rd, E. Lansing, MI 48823,  or (517) 353-7896. Optional annual newsletter subscription is $5.00 per year.
  • Credit Union loan payments previously deducted from paychecks will need to have other arrangements made.
  • There are many community agencies that have activities for seniors. Two such agencies are the Tri-County Office on Aging, 500 West Washtenaw, Lansing MI (517) 483-4150 and The Senior Citizens Activities Center, 406 S Bridge St, Grand Ledge MI (517) 627-4866.
  • Application for Social Security benefits requires presenting applicable documents such as: Birth certificates of yourself and your spouse; Marriage License(s), divorce Decree(s); Military Service Confirmation.
  • Effective with your retirement date, the MSU Corporate Credit Card becomes invalid.
