Contribution Limits (403(b) Base Retirement Plan)

The 403(b) Base Retirement Plan (BRP) is a non-qualified defined contribution plan. Contribution limits are as follows:

  • You contribute 5% of your annual base salary
  • When eligible, the University will contribute the equivalent of 10% of your annual base salary

You may not elect to contribute an amount other than 5%.

You may elect to participate in the BRP prior to receiving the University contribution.

You may be contributing to the BRP on either a voluntary or a mandatory basis.

If you are contributing to the BRP on a voluntary basis, this can impact your 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan (SRP) contributions. Refer to the 403(b) SRP Contribution Limits for additional information.

NOTE: Employees hired after 1/1/96 are subject to Section 401(a)(17) of the Internal Revenue Code. This limit prohibits employers from making retirement plan contributions on the amount of annual salary in excess of $230,000. If you are in this category, you may see your BRP contributions reduced and/or stopped within a calendar year. This limit will be indexed for inflation in $5,000 increments, in future years.
