What will be the effective date of my life insurance policies?
Accidental Death and Dismemberment:
Coverage will be effective the day that you enroll or the first day of active work, whichever is later.
Employee-Paid Life:
If you are eligible and submit an application during the first 60 days of employment or appointment to an eligible status, you may choose any one of the offered options, without having to provide medical proof of good health. However, if you are applying for coverage after 60 days of becoming eligible, the coverage will not be issued until the insurance company approves acceptable proof of good health. CIGNA may require proof of good health to be provided at your expense.
Expanded:
The effective date of your coverage begins upon your initial appointment date. If you are not actively at work then coverage will begin upon your return to work.
Travel Accident:
Coverage for any who are on authorized university travel is immediate.
How do I increase my Employee-Paid Life benefit?
Each year, during MSU’s annual open enrollment period, you may increase your coverage. No proof of good health for additional amounts equal to one benefit level increase (for example: Plan A to B, or Plan 1 to 2) or when adding the dependent option will be necessary.
An Evidence of Insurability Form will be required for larger amounts (for example: Plan A to C, or Plan 1 to 3) or when changing from one plan “silo” to another (for example: Plan 1 to Plan A or Plan A to Plan 1), as well as for employees who have been previously declined for coverage or who did not participate in the plan when previously eligible. Payroll deductions will begin once the insurance company has approved your policy.
How long does it take to receive approval for my Employee-Paid Life insurance?
When applying during the first 60 days of employment or appointment to an eligible status coverage approval is not necessary and is effective immediately. However, if you are applying for coverage after the 60 days of becoming eligible, the coverage will not be issued until the insurance company approves acceptable proof of good health. This could take some time depending on when the insurance company receives all the requested information.
