Health Plan Waiver

All regular, 50% time or more faculty, academic, executive management and support staff, who have health care coverage through another employer, may waive MSU's health care coverage and receive up to a $600 payment. The health plan waiver period runs annually from July 1 through June 30. Payment for the waiver program is made in July and is considered taxable income.

Please Note: The health plan waiver option is not available when a MSU employee and his/her spouse or MSU recognized same-sex domestic partner are both employed at MSU.

When enrolled in the health plan waiver option employees accrue points based on their employment percent and number of months enrolled in the waiver program. A full-time employee accrues one point for each month they are enrolled in the health plan waiver program. One-half or three-quarter time employees accrue .50 or .75 respectfully, for each month they are enrolled in the health plan waiver program. The following table represents the amount of the health plan waiver payment based on the number of points accrued:
